What is a speed test?
A simple search for "speed test" phrase will return a plethora of sites offering free to test the speed of your Internet connection. I will discuss one of my favorite websites speed tests and some tips & tricks save time to help you get the most accurate results.
Am I getting the speed I pay?
This is very common in many broadband DSL and cable high-speed Internet subscribers. I pay for (insert any number) Mbps, how do I know if I get any speed Internet connection that I pay?
What's your favorite site for speed tests?
I prefer speedtest.net for the following reasons:
- It is easy to use
- Allows the overall speed test
- Allows you to save and share your results
How can I test my speed on the Internet?
When you go to speedtest.net, they try to determine your position by comparing the IP address assigned by your Internet service provider with a geographic database. The city appears as a result of a large yellow star on spinning a world map with many small blue stars and the pyramids. Each is a location on the Web server that you can use to test your speed.
Which should I choose?
The site speedtest.net recommend trying multiple servers to find the best solution. This method works, but to save time, I suggest you try this trick. The results faster and more accurate speed test will almost always the area with the lowest "ping" time. A ping is just a simple test that measures the round trip time for packets sent by the computer local host to a remote computer.
How can I determine where the fastest ping?
In the top right corner of the http://speedtest.net page you will see a link to http://pingtest.net Their sister site. This site offers the ability to automatically determine the location of the lowest ping time you make a test. This free test will produce an A to F determined by the overall quality of your Internet connection. Be sure to note the location of the server of choice, then you can jump back and do a speed test in this city.
How can I use these results?
- You can compare and contrast your results with others in your area, or use a particular DSL, cable or wireless provider.
- Each time you make a hardware change, such as a new cable modem or wireless interface, you can check and see if the speed of your Internet connection was adversely affected.
- I often recommend re test your Internet connection speed to the server location that produces results faster and more consistently, and using your "Summary" feature to help identify trends in results your speed test.
